Voting rights & Texas republicans
Every two years, thousands of grassroot Republican voters from around Texas gather at a State Convention. This gathering determines what it means to be a Republican in Texas.
One of the most important ways this happens is the development of the official platform of the Texas Republican Party. This document lays out in pain staking detail what the Texas Republican Party believes - not everyone agrees with everything - but it is a pretty amazing document.
The Grimes County Republican Party would like to remind Republican voters what we are fighting to support by highlighting various planks of our Texas Republican Platform.
Plank 254 Voting Rights says:
"We support equal suffrage for all United States citizens of voting age. We oppose any identification of citizens by race, country of origin, creed, sexuality, or lifestyle choices, and oppose use of any such identification for purposes of creating voting districts. We urge that the Voting Rights Act of 1965, codified and updated in 1973, be repealed and not reauthorized."
The Texas Republican Party understands that a person's immutable characteristics do NOT decide how they vote. Candidates and political parties must compete in the arena of ideas for each and every vote. Legislators should not disenfranchise any voter by assuming their vote based on race, country of origin, creed, sexuality, or lifestyle choices.
