It genuinely surprises me when people say they don’t care about politics. Politics is simply the way we make collective decisions. Whether we like it or not, the political process shapes our taxes, our schools, our freedoms, and the future our children inherit. An informed electorate isn’t optional – it’s the only way our system works.
When I vote, I look at two things: the candidate and the candidate’s party. People judge individual candidates differently, but a political party tells you something fundamental: how they look at the world, what they think they are owed, and their responsibilities to society.
If I know someone is a Republican, I have a good sense of their basic philosophy. I know that they generally believe that government should be small and taxes low, that families and communities should care for themselves, and that I should let my neighbor live his life as he sees fit. Democrats, on the other hand, typically support a more expansive federal government, higher taxes (often advertised as “only on the rich,” but historically affecting everyone), more federal programs, and more centralized control over daily life.
Let’s dig into a few of these further. Why do Republicans want:
Small Government & Low Taxes – Republicans believe the federal government has drifted far beyond its constitutional limits. Our system was designed so that Washington handles only specific national responsibilities, while states retain most governing power.
Does that sound like what we have now? Nope. Shrinking the federal footprint and lowering taxes returns authority to the people closest to the issues – states, communities, and families.
Families & Communities Should Care for Themselves – Ronald Reagan had a great line “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the Government, and I’m here to help.” You got that right Ronnie! Republicans trust families, local leaders, and elected officials who actually live in the community – not distant bureaucrats – to make decisions. Ask yourself: who should decide what books your child reads in class? A Washington agency, or your local school board?
Let My Neighbor Life His Life as He Sees Fit – Republicans believe your life is your business. If you aren’t causing harm to someone else, you do you. Disagreements about what constitutes harm and how much is acceptable will always exist, but when decisions are made locally, the people living under the rules are far more likely to agree with them.
How Do We Fix the Problem?
Republicans believe that the answer is pretty simple – stop expecting Washington to fix every problem.
Reduce taxes. Shrink the federal workforce. Make sure the swamp can’t look for something to do and somewhere to spend your money. Let states craft their own solutions — even if that means 50 different approaches.
Education is a Perfect Example
The Federal Government has a say in your child’s education, because they provide FUNDING, and with funding comes mandates, paperwork, and compliance. Republicans have proposed eliminating federal education funding, lowering taxes, and returning full authority to states.
Without federal strings attached, school districts could redirect money toward what their voters want: reinstating useful regulations, raising teacher pay, improving curriculum, or lowering local taxes. States would innovate, and the best models would naturally rise to the top as voters demand similar success.
Support Republican Candidates
The talking heads that bemoan party voters are trying to change your behavior. They tell you that party doesn’t matter – only the candidate matters. I disagree.
If I’m faced with a choice between a boring Republican and an interesting democrat or an old Republican over a young democrat, I will vote for the Republican every time. Not because of the candidate, but because I know they will be more likely to support policies that I support. YOU VOTE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN REPUBLICAN VALUES AND SUPPORT REPUBLICAN POLICIES.
